Flashback Friday: Vellum + Pixies + Giveaway!

It's Melinda with you today and I'm going to share a layout that I created using the new Doodlebug Pixies and Sprinkles plus a blast from the past... yes, vellum is making a comeback!

Now who remembers these or perhaps you still have some stashed away in your cupboard? It's Doodlebug's Tri-colour Vellum and I have been having lots of fun making overlapping circles on my layout to produce even more shades of wonderful color.

TIP: As much as I love vellum, I've also learned that it can be quite fiddly to use with punches so after much trial and error and a bit of hair pulling I realized that it's easier to place a piece of copy paper behind the vellum before you punch out your shape. Believe me, it gives the cleanest cut and the vellum doesn't get stuck in your punch.

And now for something new... Doodlebug Pixies and Sprinkles! *Sigh*

I wanted to have a subtle frame behind my photographs so I created two stitched circles on my layout using a stitching template as a guide.

I then cut varying lengths of the pixie sticks, added a small amount of adhesive to the back and then stitched then into place randomly around the circles.

Lastly to finish my layout I added a few hand embossed polka dots by simply turning my layout over and placing an open embossing folder under my layout and using an embossing tool to create the dots.

Thank you for stopping by... I hope I have given you inspiration for using the new Pixies and Sprinkles, plus you may just need to go and rummage through your stash to see if you have any vellum hiding away that is waiting to be loved again.

PIXIES: Beaded Accents on a Layout by Monique

Hi everyone, it's Monique today with a layout using Doodlebug's Day to Day Collection and the super fun new "Pixies"!

This is the page I created:

And here's a detail shot of the "pixie" circle I created:

What I did was easy: first you roughly design your page (don't adhere anything yet!). Use a pencil to draw a (part of the) circle:

Next cut the pixies in little parts (I used garden shears to do this, but I'm sure normal scissors would do the tric as well):

Now stitch the little pixie parts onto your page:

And then adhere the rest of your papers and embellishments. I used the Xyron Mega Runner for this part:

And your page is ready! I really loved using the pixies on my page!!

Here're a few close-ups of the rest of the finished page:

Hope you like the result!

Thanks for visiting Doodlebug's blog today!

PIXIES: Halloween Ornaments by Amy

Whether or not you go all out decorating for the holidays, today I have a simple craft that will allow you to add something fun to your celebrations with very little time or effort.

With one pack of Pixies, you can decorate a large set of branches.  Add a scrap bunting, and you have a fantastic focal piece.

These ornaments are fun and quick to build.  With a few simple steps you'll have a frightfully fun set of decorations.

1.  Gather your supplies.  You will need your pixies, beads and string.
2.  Make your main pixie bead.  Cut down one of the sticks by 1/3 to 1/2.  Find two matching embellishments.  Put the bottom of each embellishment on the pixie.
3.  Put the top of each embellishment on the pixie.  You may need to bend the tab just a bit to get it to fit.  Slide down to center on the pixie.

1.  Cut a length of string at least twice as long as your finished ornament.  Take one bead and tie it to one end of the string, leaving a short tail.
2. Place a second bead on the string, thread the tail up through the bead.
3.  Add more beads and your pixie bead, stringing the tail thread through the beads until it's all hidden.

1.  Add your final beads.  Once the last bead is on, bring your string back up through the bottom of the last bead.  With tension on the beads to keep them cinched up, tighten the thread to keep the beads in place.
2.  Tie a loop on the remaining string, keeping the knot close to the top bead.  Thread the remaining tail down through the beads to hide it.

You are finished.  Hang your ornaments from branches, a chandelier or add them to a festive banner.  The possibilities are limitless.

Have a "Spook"- tacular Halloween!
xoxo,
Amy

Pixies: Bracelet Tutorial by Sherry

by Sherry Cartwright

Fall weather has finally hit central Texas for a few days and it has me inspired to create with the beautiful hues associated with the season. Doodlebug Design has a beautiful palette of brown, orange and gold with a pop of turquoise and lime green.  Beautiful.

Let's talk pixies first.  Have you seen the new Pixies?!   They are food-grade plastic straws similar to coffee stirrers.  But, they are sturdy enough to cut and can even be bent.  They are so very cute, are available in the Doodlebug Design rainbow of colors and can be used in so many creative ways.

To create this bracelet for my daughter, I gathered a few supplies:
  • safety pins
  • pixies
  • elastic cord
  • button
Wrap elastic cording around your wrist to measure size, then add another two inches for knotting.

Cut pixies into various lengths to fit your safety pins.   This creates "beads."  Open all safety pins and then add pixie beads.  Close.  Repeat oodles of times until you have enough to fit  to make the bracelet large enough to go around your wrist.

Once you have enough pixie beads made, string them onto elastic cording --- one strand through the "eye" of the safety pin and once through the "loop."  Fasten off.

I added a cute tree pin given at CHA, but you could turn a new doodlebug design doodad [think trendy flair or flatback pins] into a pin by adding a pin finding, available at craft stores.

Other ideas for pixies jewelry projects:
  • Cut pixies into beads and string on thin elastic cord to create single strand bracelet.  Make several and layer them up.
  • Do the same thing on a smaller scale to make rings.
  • Sew Pixies onto a leather cuff.
  • String cut Pixie beads with seed beads to make necklace.
Watch for more creative projects from the Doodlebug Design team. Be sure to share your Pixies creations with our team.  We love to see your creations!

Halloween Pixie Frames
by Wendy Sue Anderson

Good Morning, Doodlebug friends!  It’s Wendy Sue here today, sharing a fun way to use the new “pixies” on a Halloween layout featuring product from the new “Halloween Parade” collection!

I decided to cut the pixies in half and use the pieces to create frames.  They aren’t exactly perfect, but I think that it adds to the whimsical feeling that Halloween should exude!

I printed out photos (2 1/2” square) from last Halloween and used the pixies to frame them.

I also framed some patterned paper (from the 6x6 pad) and added fun stickers, tags, and other embellishments.

Of course I couldn’t resist using the fun and Colorful Star Jewels, Doodle Washi tape, and Doodle Twine too!

If you use pixies on your next project, be sure to leave a comment and let us know so we can see your creativity at work!  May your October be full of tricks and treats…but mostly treats!

HOW TO WIN
We'll be giving away a set of the new Halloween Parade Pixies and Toppers (shown above). All you need to do is leave a comment about what YOU would do with PIXIES. We'll announce the Doodlebug winner tomorrow on the blog and offer a new giveaway. And don't forget to stop by the Xyron blog to enter to  win some fun adhesive products.

Boo-tiful Halloween Cards
by Kathy Martin

Hey Doodlebugs! Kathy Martin here with a project share using the fabulous new Pixies and Halloween Parade line! Pixies have become a new favorite accent of mine! They're colorful and fun and I can't wait to decorate my next batch of home-baked cupcakes with them! I've already used them on a number of projects and today's goal was to step outside the box a little and find a couple unique ways to use them. For the spider web card I thought they looked fun as part of a cluster of elements accented with the Doodlebug Washi and for the second card I made little squares to frame my embellishments.

HOW TO WIN
We'll be giving away a set of the new Halloween Parade Pixies and Toppers (shown above). Go check out the projects on Xyron's blog for the past two days and let me know which project you like the best...leave a comment. We'll announce the Doodlebug winner tomorrow on the blog and offer a new giveaway. And don't forget to stop by the Xyron blog to enter to  win some fun adhesive products.
